Description
Influenza is a respiratory illness caused by viruses that circulates globally every year. While symptoms can vary from person to person, they typically include fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and cough. Severe influenza can lead to hospitalization and even death. Vaccination is the best way to effectively prevent influenza and its complications.
The trivalent influenza vaccine is one of the most advanced flu vaccines available today. It contains three different influenza virus strains:
- Two A-type influenza viruses (H1N1 and H3N2)
- One B-type influenza viruses
By immunizing against these three virus strains, the trivalent vaccine can provide you with broader protection and lower the risk of getting the flu.
Vaccination Information
To achieve the best immune protection, it is recommended that you get the latest trivalent influenza vaccine every year. The vaccine’s effectiveness usually lasts for one year, as influenza viruses continually mutate, and the vaccine components are adjusted annually based on the latest circulating strains.
High-Risk Groups
The trivalent influenza vaccine is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and above, but it is especially important for certain high-risk groups:
- Adults aged 65 and older: Older adults have declining immune systems and are more susceptible to influenza and its serious complications, such as pneumonia.
- Pregnant women: Getting the flu vaccine during pregnancy can protect both the mother and the unborn child.
- Children aged 6 months to 5 years: Children’s immune systems are not yet fully developed, making them more vulnerable to influenza.
- People with chronic medical conditions: Those with conditions like heart disease, diabetes, or asthma are at higher risk of worsening their illness if they get the flu.
- Healthcare workers and caregivers: They are often in close contact with patients and can easily contract and transmit the flu virus.

Benefits of the Vaccine
Even if you don’t belong to the high-risk groups, getting the trivalent influenza vaccine can still lower your risk of getting the flu and missing work or school. Additionally, you contribute to the community’s public health by helping to reduce virus transmission.
Side Effects
Like any other vaccine, the trivalent influenza vaccine may cause some mild side effects, but most people can tolerate them well. Common side effects include:
- Soreness, redness, and swelling at the injection site
- Mild fever
- Muscle aches
- Headache
- Nausea
These side effects usually go away within 24-48 hours and are a normal immune response. If the symptoms persist or worsen, please seek medical attention immediately.
Serious allergic reactions are very rare, but if symptoms like difficulty breathing, facial and throat swelling occur, immediate medical attention and appropriate treatment are required.
Overall, the benefits of the trivalent influenza vaccine far outweigh the risks. It can effectively prevent influenza and reduce the incidence of complications, which is crucial for protecting individual and public health.
