Description

RSV Long-Acting Monoclonal Antibody (Respiratory Syncytial Virus)

RSV is a common respiratory virus primarily transmitted through respiratory droplets or direct contact with the secretions of an infected person. Infants and young children are particularly high-risk, especially those under two years of age; approximately 90% of children will have been infected with RSV by their second birthday. In addition to immediate acute symptoms such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia, some children may experience long-term sequelae, including an increased risk of developing asthma later in life.

Infection Risks

The risk of RSV infection in infants is extremely high. Even full-term, healthy infants remain susceptible to infection, with potential consequences as severe as those seen in premature infants or children with chronic conditions (such as heart or lung disease). The period from birth to six months is particularly critical, as the immune system is not yet fully mature and antibody levels are low, making infants more prone to severe pneumonia or bronchiolitis requiring hospitalization. Close contact with infected individuals, crowded environments, or having sick family members significantly increases the chance of transmission. Therefore, preventative measures should be taken for all infants to reduce infection risks and avoid long-term complications like asthma.

Preventative Methods

  • Maintain hand hygiene and avoid touching the eyes, mouth, or nose.
  • Cover the mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, and dispose of used tissues promptly.
  • Avoid taking young children to crowded public places, especially during peak flu and virus seasons.
  • The most effective preventative method currently recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) is the injection of RSV long-acting monoclonal antibodies, particularly for newborns and high-risk groups.
  • Compared to maternal RSV vaccination, direct administration of long-acting monoclonal antibodies to the infant provides superior protection. Studies indicate that the antibody levels and clinical protection rates achieved via direct injection exceed those transferred from a vaccinated mother to the fetus.
  • Direct injection provides immediate protection upon administration after birth. While maternal vaccination during pregnancy can transfer antibodies, the duration and efficacy of that protection are slightly lower. Currently, the WHO recommends long-acting monoclonal antibody injections for all newborns and high-risk infants.

Eligibility for Immunization

  • All newborns and infants up to 1 year old.
  • High-risk infants and toddlers aged 1 to 2 years.
