Rotavirus

Rotavirus is one of the leading causes of severe gastroenteritis in infants and young children. Currently, there are no specific medications to treat rotavirus infection; only symptomatic relief can be provided.

Rotavirus infection can cause fever, persistent diarrhea, continuous vomiting, abdominal pain, severe dehydration, shock, and even death.

Newborns and infants are at high risk

Peak infection period: 6 to 24 months old
Severe cases: 4 to 23 months old
Nearly all children under 5 years old have been infected with rotavirus at some point

Studies have shown that the cumulative risk of hospitalization due to rotavirus infection in children under 5 years old in Hong Kong is 1 in 24.

Treatment and prevention of rotavirus

Currently, there are no antiviral medications available for treatment.
Symptomatic relief measures include intravenous fluid replacement and temperature control for severe cases.

Prevention of infection

Vaccination
Thorough handwashing before and after handling food, using the toilet, and changing diapers.
Seek early medical consultation if symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea occur in infants.

Broad protection against nine common strains worldwide: G1P8, G2P4, G3P8, G4P8, G8P4, G9P8, G9P4, G9P6, G12P6

G1, G2, G3, and G4 are commonly found worldwide

G9 and G12 strains have been detected in Hong Kong

G8 and G12 strains have been identified in China, the United Kingdom, and Australia

Children’s oral rotavirus vaccine

Suitable for infants aged 2 months and older, requires a two-dose regimen:

First dose: 2 months
Second dose: 4 months

Must be used on or before the expiration date.
