New Generation Shingles Vaccination (2 doses)

The shingles vaccine is designed to prevent infections caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It is suitable for high-risk individuals aged 18 and older, as well as those aged 50 and above. The vaccine effectively reduces the risk of shingles and its associated post-herpetic neuralgia, decreasing the likelihood of other complications. After vaccination, patients can achieve over 90% protection, which is particularly important for those who have previously had chickenpox. Common side effects include pain at the injection site, muscle pain, and mild fatigue.

Common Side Effects

  • Up to 20% of individuals may experience post-herpetic neuralgia, which can cause long-lasting pain similar to electric shocks, burns, or needle pricks for months or even over 10 years.
  • 10%-20% may develop ocular shingles, potentially leading to vision impairment, increased intraocular pressure, neurogenic ulcers, acute retinal necrosis, glaucoma, and blindness. About 1 in 10 may experience moderate to severe vision loss.
  • There is an increased risk of stroke or coronary heart disease by nearly 30%, which can last for 12 years or longer.

Patient Experience

“I have been relying on painkillers for the last five years. The shingles caused blisters that quickly turned into skin ulcers, leading to hospitalization due to worsening symptoms. The pain was so severe that I couldn’t eat or sleep, and even simple movements became impossible, leaving me very frustrated. Even today, I still feel pain and cannot function normally.” — A 63-year-old patient who had shingles five years ago.

Can Shingles Recur? What Causes It?

Shingles, commonly known as “生蛇,” is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. After recovering from chickenpox, the virus can remain dormant in the nervous system. Anyone who has had chickenpox, even if healthy, can experience shingles again. Treatment includes antiviral medication within the first 72 hours of rash appearance. However, initial symptoms may not be obvious, causing patients to miss the optimal treatment window.

Almost Every Adult Can Experience Shingles

When the virus reactivates, it can spread along nerve pathways to the skin or other body areas. Symptoms can vary based on the affected area, potentially leading to facial nerve paralysis, vision loss, or even hearing loss.

Up to 30% of patients may develop post-herpetic neuralgia, enduring nerve pain for months or years. Even light touch can cause severe pain, requiring long-term pain management, significantly impacting daily life and quality of life.

New Generation Vaccine SHINGRIX

The shingles vaccine (ZOSTER VACCINE RECOMBINANT, ADJUVANTED) is recommended as the preferred option by the CDC. It is the only shingles vaccine with over 90% efficacy, effectively preventing shingles and its associated post-herpetic neuralgia while reducing the risk of other complications.

Who Should Get the New Shingles Vaccine?

  • High-Risk Individuals: Individuals aged 18 and above, as well as those aged 50 and above, should be vaccinated. Even those who have received the live attenuated shingles vaccine are advised to get the recombinant shingles vaccine for enhanced protection.
  • Immunocompromised Individuals: There are no contraindications for immunocompromised individuals; vaccination is suitable.
