In the fast-paced modern metropolis of Hong Kong, weight management has become a critical health issue. According to the 2024 World Obesity Report, the proportion of overweight or obese adults globally continues to rise, projected to exceed 50% by 2035. Local data from the Department of Health also indicates that approximately 32.6% of individuals aged 15 to 84 in Hong Kong meet the obesity threshold (BMI≥25), with an additional 22% falling into the overweight category (BMI≥23-24.9). Notably, studies reveal that nearly 40% of overweight individuals fail to accurately recognize their own weight status.

When used with diet and exercise, Mounjaro Manjale® can treat patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes and manage chronic weight issues in individuals with a BMI of 30 kg/m² or higher (obesity) or a BMI of 27 kg/m² or higher but below 30 kg/m² (overweight) who have weight-related conditions like high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, or heart disease.

GLP-1 & GIP Dual Mechanism: More Comprehensive Blood Sugar Control and Weight Management

The primary ingredient in Mounjaro® (Tirzepatide) is the first dual receptor agonist that simultaneously targets both GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) and GIP (Glucose-Dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide). Compared to traditional single-mechanism drugs for weight loss or blood sugar control, it delivers more significant results.

Differences and Synergistic Effects of GLP-1 and GIP

  • GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1)
    • Action: Slows gastric emptying, increases satiety, promotes insulin secretion, and inhibits glucagon, helping to lower blood sugar.
    • Benefits: Effectively controls appetite, reduces calorie intake, and improves insulin sensitivity.
  • GIP (Glucose-Dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide)
    • Action: Promotes insulin secretion after meals and directly acts on fat cells to reduce fat storage.
    • Benefits: Further enhances blood sugar regulation and may help reduce visceral fat accumulation.

Advantages of the Dual Mechanism

  • Stronger Blood Sugar Reduction: The combined action of GLP-1 and GIP provides more stable blood sugar levels compared to single-mechanism drugs.
  • More Significant Weight Loss: Clinical studies show that Tirzepatide outperforms traditional GLP-1 receptor agonists in weight loss.
  • Improved Metabolic Health: It not only aids in weight control but also reduces cardiovascular risks, making it suitable for individuals with diabetes and obesity.
