What are warts?
Warts are benign skin growths caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. This virus stimulates abnormal growth of skin cells, forming warts. The shape and size of warts vary from person to person, some flat, some protruding, presenting various appearances. These small, raised flesh particles not only affect appearance but can also cause itching and pain.
Causes of warts
The root cause of warts is human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. There are over 100 different types of HPV viruses, some of which can cause warts. The main transmission routes for warts include:
• Direct skin contact: Wart viruses can spread through direct contact with warts on a patient’s skin. Therefore, avoid sharing personal items such as towels and nail clippers with patients.
• Sexual contact: Some types of HPV viruses can be transmitted between partners through sexual activity, leading to genital warts.
• Self-inoculation: Sometimes patients may spread the wart virus from one site to other parts of their body.
• Indirect transmission: Wart viruses may also spread indirectly through shared bathtubs, swimming pools, etc.
Common types of skin warts
Based on their appearance and location, warts can be classified into several types, including:
- Flat warts (Plane warts)
• Usually appear on hands, forearms, and face
• Appear as flat, rough small spots, light brown or flesh-colored
• Flat warts are highly contagious, with dozens to hundreds of flat warts appearing
• Mainly affect appearance but may also cause skin itching - Plantar warts
• Grow on palms and soles, causing pain and discomfort when walking
• Plantar warts are usually larger and raised, with a rough surface and cracks
• Sometimes mistaken for corns - Common warts
• Often occur on fingers, palms, and forearms
• They are hard in texture, with a rough surface protruding like buttons
• Sometimes mistaken for skin cancer
Wart treatment methods
The method of wart removal depends on the type, size, depth, number, and location of the warts. Treatment options include carbon dioxide laser (CO2 Laser) wart removal, topical medications, cryotherapy, and surgical wart removal. Currently, CO2 Laser wart removal is the most widely adopted by doctors, precisely vaporizing and cauterizing warts while avoiding damage to surrounding normal skin.
