Description

What is Hepatitis B?

Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV), which can lead to acute or chronic hepatitis, potentially progressing to cirrhosis or liver cancer. According to the Hong Kong Population Health Survey (2020–22), approximately 5.6% of the population are HBV carriers, meaning 1 in 20 individuals may carry the virus. HBV is primarily transmitted through blood and bodily fluids (e.g., saliva, semen, vaginal secretions) or from mother to child during childbirth. Vaccination against Hepatitis B is the most effective way to prevent infection, protecting you and your family from this serious disease.

The Hepatitis B vaccine is the optimal choice for preventing HBV infection, safeguarding your family from liver-related diseases.

  • Adult Hepatitis B Vaccine 1 Dose $700 (Including a doctor’s consultation)
  • Adult Hepatitis B Vaccine 3 Dose  $1,400 (Including a doctor’s consultation)

Why Vaccinate Against Hepatitis B?

The Hepatitis B vaccine is a critical measure for preventing HBV infection. Key reasons:

  • Prevention of Severe Liver Diseases: HBV infection can lead to chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, or liver cancer, posing significant health risks.
  • Protection for High-Risk Groups: Healthcare workers, individuals who inject drugs, men who have sex with men, those with multiple sexual partners, HIV-positive individuals, frequent recipients of blood products, and dialysis patients are at higher risk and benefit significantly from vaccination.
  • Maternal-Infant Protection: Hepatitis B can be transmitted from mother to child during birth. Vaccination significantly reduces the risk of newborn infection, protecting future generations.
  • Long-Term Immunity: Studies show that 90–95% of individuals develop protective antibodies after completing the three-dose series, providing immunity for 20–30 years.

Who Should Receive the Hepatitis B Vaccine?

The Hepatitis B vaccine is recommended for:

  • All Newborns: The Hong Kong Childhood Immunisation Programme advises administering the first dose within 24 hours of birth, followed by doses at 1 month and 6 months.
  • High-Risk Individuals: Family members (parents, siblings, children, sexual partners) of chronic HBV carriers, individuals who inject drugs, men who have sex with men, those with multiple sexual partners, HIV-positive individuals, frequent recipients of blood products, dialysis patients, and healthcare workers exposed to blood or bodily fluids.
  • Unvaccinated Adults: Adults who have not completed the vaccine series, especially those with high-risk factors, should consider vaccination. A blood test is recommended to confirm the absence of prior infection or immunity before vaccination.

The Hepatitis B vaccine contains purified Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), administered via injection to stimulate antibody production and prevent HBV infection. The standard schedule involves three doses:

Dose

Timing

First Dose

Within 24 hours of birth (newborns) or at the start of the vaccination schedule

Second Dose

1 month after the first dose

Third Dose

6 months after the first dose

Upon completing the three-dose series, 90–95% of individuals develop protective antibodies, offering long-term immunity. The vaccine is extensively validated for safety, with minimal side effects, including:

  • Mild pain or redness at the injection site
  • Headache, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Fever, fatigue, irritability, or abdominal pain

These side effects are typically mild and resolve within 1–2 days. Rare side effects may include flu-like symptoms, muscle pain, dizziness, joint pain, rash, or low blood pressure.
