Stroke is a common and serious neurological vascular disease that can lead to severe consequences such as neurological impairments, disabilities, and even death. However, many risk factors for stroke can be identified and controlled early on to reduce the occurrence and severity of strokes. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for stroke risk assessment is a non-invasive and effective examination method that provides valuable evaluations for stroke risk.

MRI Brain Examination:

A brain MRI examination can help doctors detect stroke risk factors early. It provides detailed information about brain structure and function, including brain lesions, tumors, and cerebral hemorrhages. This assists doctors in assessing brain health.

MRA Neck and Brain Examination:

Neck and brain MRA examinations evaluate the condition of the carotid and cerebral arteries. They can detect issues such as vascular stenosis, thrombosis, and aneurysms. Additionally, they measure indicators such as vessel wall thickness, plaque presence, and blood flow velocity, all of which are important indicators of stroke risk. Based on these assessments, doctors can determine the level of stroke risk and develop appropriate preventive measures.

Triple High Examination (Hypertension, Hyperglycemia, and Hyperlipidemia):

These examinations provide information about cardiovascular health status. They assess factors closely related to stroke risk, such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and arrhythmias. By evaluating these risk factors, doctors can develop suitable treatment plans and preventive measures to reduce the likelihood of stroke occurrence.

Please make an appointment immediately to allow us to help you comprehensively understand your health risks and provide corresponding health management advice.

As the year-end approaches, we often reflect on our work and family, but have you reviewed your health?

Data from the Hong Kong Department of Health shows that cancer has been the top killer in Hong Kong for consecutive years, claiming nearly 15,000 lives in 2022 alone, with lung cancer, colorectal cancer, and liver cancer ranking among the top three. A lack of exercise, a diet high in salt and fat, and high work stress have led to a continuous rise in the incidence of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and stroke, with stroke and heart disease also ranking among Hong Kong’s top five deadly diseases.

For this reason, regular health check-ups can help you detect hidden diseases early and seize the golden treatment window. For example, with lung cancer, if detected early, the five-year survival rate can reach 72.4% (compared to only 7.8% in late stages). Through health check-ups, you can monitor blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and other indicators, as well as use imaging tests like MRI, CT, and ultrasound to detect tumors and vascular blockages.

This article will comprehensively break down health check-up recommendations for men and women aged 30+, 40+, and 50+, while providing suggested check-up plans to help you choose the right annual health screening program.

Health Check-Up Recommendations for 30+

Entering your 30s, you’re in the prime of your career and family life, but it’s also the most stressful and fast-paced stage. You may be striving for career success, starting a family, or even caring for young children, often neglecting your own health.

However, many chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and fatty liver are silently accumulating in the body, often without any early symptoms. Take diabetes as an example: currently, approximately 700,000 people in Hong Kong have diabetes, accounting for about one in ten of the population, with numbers clearly rising sharply. In terms of prevalence, 2% of people under 35 have diabetes.

At the same time, serious diseases like cancer or tumors often show no obvious symptoms in their early stages, and missing the golden treatment window can lead to rapid deterioration. Through regular comprehensive check-ups, you can gain insight into early signs of tumors, organ diseases, and chronic conditions, allowing early intervention to seize the golden treatment window and provide greater health security for you and your family.

Therefore, individuals over 30 who develop a habit of annual comprehensive check-ups can detect potential issues early, establish a personal health baseline, and lay a solid foundation for long-term health.

Health management for those over 30 should focus on early identification of chronic diseases and potential tumors, combined with checks for the three highs, cancer marker screenings, and women-specific checks (breast, uterus, ovaries). Through ultrasound, ECG, and blood tests, you can monitor the condition of vital organs, detect tumors, organ abnormalities, and chronic health risks early.

Health Check-Up Recommendations for 40+

Entering your 40s, you may be at the peak of your career while facing increased family responsibilities, caring for growing children or even elderly parents, with work and life pressures intertwined. On the other hand, your metabolism slows, immune function weakens, and the risk of chronic diseases and cancer begins to rise.

According to data from the Hong Kong Department of Health, about 30% of adults in Hong Kong have hypertension, and there are over 700,000 diabetes patients, meaning one in ten people is diabetic. Additionally, liver health studies estimate that up to 42% of Hong Kong people have fatty liver!

Therefore, individuals over 40 should prioritize comprehensive screening of vital organs, not just relying on basic blood pressure and blood sugar checks but using advanced imaging tests to assess health risks early.

Through advanced imaging tests like MRI, CTCA, and LDCT, you can comprehensively assess your body’s condition in one go, detecting tumors, heart vessel issues, lung abnormalities, and disc herniation risks early. Combined with checks for the three highs, cancer marker screenings, and gynecological or urological tests, comprehensive screenings help seize the golden treatment window and prevent condition worsening.

Individuals over 40 are recommended to undergo a comprehensive check-up annually. Those with a family history of heart disease, cancer, or chronic conditions may increase the frequency or scope of checks.

Health Check-Up Recommendations for 50+

Entering your 50s, bodily functions noticeably decline, and the risk of chronic diseases and cancer significantly increases. According to Hong Kong cancer statistics, most common cancers (including colorectal, breast, lung, liver, and prostate cancer) consider those aged 50 and above as high-risk groups.

While traditional blood tests and ultrasounds provide basic health information, they often cannot fully detect “hidden crises” like cerebrovascular diseases or heart conditions. If these potential issues go undetected, the consequences can be severe, including stroke, sudden heart attacks, impaired daily functioning, or even death.
Additionally, a University of Hong Kong study indicates that “young stroke” cases (ages 18–55) have increased by about 30%. High stress, irregular schedules, prolonged sitting, and late nights are all high-risk factors for stroke. Therefore, individuals over 50 should focus on brain, heart, and lung health, using advanced imaging tests to detect potential issues early and seize the golden treatment window.

Whether you’re 30+ preparing to build a strong health foundation, 40+ at the peak of your career, or 50+ needing comprehensive cancer and stroke prevention, Trinity offers professional check-up plans.
As the year-end approaches, schedule a comprehensive health check-up for yourself and your family to detect and treat issues early.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Question 1: When should I start getting comprehensive health check-ups?
It’s recommended to start annual health check-ups from age 30. At 30’s, you can opt for basic checks with added ultrasound items; those over 40 should monitor chronic disease and tumor risks; and those over 50 are at high risk for cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

Question 2: How do check-ups differ for men and women?
In addition to routine checks, women should undergo gynecological screenings, including breast imaging, cervical cell tests, and pelvic ultrasounds; men should add prostate checks, including PSA blood tests and prostate ultrasounds.

Question 3: Do I still need check-ups if I have no symptoms?
It’s even more important to get checked early, as many chronic diseases and early-stage cancers, such as prediabetes, fatty liver, and lung cancer, show no obvious symptoms. Regular check-ups help detect hidden issues and seize the golden treatment window.

Breast cancer is not terrifying! As long as it is detected early and treated appropriately, the 5-year survival rate at stage I can reach 99%, while at stage IV it drops to around 30%.

Early-stage breast cancer often has no symptoms. Data from the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation shows that over 90% of patients present with a painless lump, but self-examination may not always detect it, making regular screening essential.

Currently, breast imaging options include Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Mammography, and Breast Ultrasound. Both MRI and mammography can detect non-palpable lumps and early microcalcifications, aiding in the early diagnosis of stage I breast cancer. Among them, breast MRI has higher sensitivity—over 90%—and is particularly suitable for high-risk women and those aged 40 or above concerned about breast health.

Since breast characteristics and risk factors differ by age, choosing the right screening method improves accuracy. Below are recommendations for women in their 20s, 30s, and 40s.

Question 1: What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a malignant tumor caused by uncontrolled division of breast cells. It not only damages healthy breast tissue but can also spread to lymph nodes, and even metastasize to the lungs, bones, and brain. When cancer cells severely impair organ function, organ failure may occur, ultimately threatening life.

Question 2: How common is breast cancer in Hong Kong?

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in Hong Kong. In 2022, there were 5,182 new cases, accounting for 28.6% of all female cancers. On average, 1 in 14 Hong Kong women may develop invasive breast cancer in her lifetime. It also ranks third among cancer-related deaths in women.

Question 3: Which age group is most affected?

The median age of diagnosis among Hong Kong women is 58, younger than in the U.S. and Australia. Over 90% of cases are aged 40 or above, yet the youngest case was under 20—showing breast cancer is not limited to older women.

Question 4: What is the survival rate of breast cancer? How are stages classified?

The survival rate is closely related to the stage at diagnosis: around 99% at stage I, but only 30% at stage IV. Early detection and treatment are therefore key to improving cure rates.

In Hong Kong, the staging system follows the internationally recognized TNM system, based on tumor size (T), regional lymph node status (N), and distant metastasis (M).

Question 5: Can breast hyperplasia develop into breast cancer?

Typical breast hyperplasia is a common benign change and does not become cancer. However, “atypical hyperplasia” carries a higher risk of breast cancer. Regular monitoring is recommended to lower risk.

Question 6: What causes breast cancer? Can it be prevented?

Many women think heredity is the main cause, but data from the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Registry shows that over 80% of breast cancer patients surveyed had no family history! Therefore, breast cancer is not solely determined by genetics. The exact causes remain unclear, but certain factors increase risk:

Non-modifiable risk factors

Age: Risk increases with age.

Family history: Having a mother, sister, or daughter with breast cancer.

Genetics: Mutations such as BRCA are linked to higher risk.

Reproductive history: Late first pregnancy, no children, or not breastfeeding increases risk.

Menstrual and menopausal history: Early menarche or being overweight after menopause increases risk.

Modifiable risk factors

Lifestyle: Lack of exercise, heavy drinking, smoking, unhealthy diet, obesity.

Environmental factors: Night shifts, long-term chemical exposure (e.g., certain cosmetics, hair dyes, plastics) may increase risk.

While breast cancer cannot be fully prevented, the following measures help reduce risk:

Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Balanced diet, regular exercise, weight control, no smoking or alcohol.

Regular screening: Early detection of abnormalities, especially for high-risk women.

Early treatment: Early-stage treatment has high success rates, reducing mortality significantly.

Lifestyle changes cannot completely eliminate risk, but healthy habits plus regular screening are key to reducing incidence and improving survival. You may use this breast cancer risk assessment tool to evaluate your risk.

Therefore, regular screening is essential—detecting subtle breast changes early minimizes impact. Book your health check now to protect yourself!

Early detection significantly improves cure rates." title="【Breast Cancer Screening】5 Common Breast Examination Methods – Recommendations for Women in Their 20s, 30s, and 40s+">

Question 7: How should breast screening be arranged by age group?

Breast screening should be based on age and risk factors. Early detection significantly improves cure rates.

Notes

Women aged 20–30

• Breast self-exam
• Ultrasound
• Genetic testing

Women under 30 generally have denser breast tissue. Radiation-based screening should be avoided, with radiation-free ultrasound preferred. For those with family history of breast or ovarian cancer, genetic testing is recommended to assess risk.

Question 9: How to correctly perform breast self-examination?

Breast self-examination is a basic screening method that helps detect abnormalities early. Recommended once a month for women aged 20 and above. For premenopausal women, perform on day 7–10 after menstruation starts. For postmenopausal women, choose the same day each month.

Steps:

1. Observe breast appearance

Stand naturally in front of a mirror, observe breast size, shape, and skin color.

Raise both arms, check for skin changes (dimpling, wrinkling, redness, swelling).

Hands on hips, check for asymmetry.

2. Palpate the breast

While lying down, place one hand behind your head. Use fingertips to examine the entire breast in circular motions, including the underarm area.

Standing in the shower, use moist fingertips to check the breast in circular motions from outer edge to center.

3. Check nipple discharge

Gently squeeze the nipple. Look for discharge that is bloody, clear, brown, or yellow-green.

Spontaneous discharge from one nipple requires immediate medical attention.

If you notice lumps, skin dimpling (orange peel appearance), nipple retraction, abnormal discharge, or axillary lumps, seek professional medical advice promptly.

Beyond breast checks, women should not neglect general health screening, such as blood tests (liver and kidney function, cholesterol, blood sugar), pelvic ultrasound, and Pap smears—these help detect common health problems early.

Studies have found that temperature is closely related to the risk of coronary heart disease. For every 1°C rise in temperature, the mortality risk associated with coronary heart disease and other cardiovascular diseases increases by approximately 2.1%. High temperatures in summer not only cause heatstroke but also increase the burden on the heart, trigger the symptoms of coronary heart disease and may even induce acute heart attacks.

This article will introduce the causes, common symptoms and preventive methods of coronary heart disease to help you protect your heart and stay away from the risks of heart disease.

What is Coronary Artery Disease (Coronary Heart Disease)?

Coronary arteries are crown-shaped blood vessels surrounding the heart, which deliver oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle. When these blood vessels narrow or harden due to the accumulation of fat or cholesterol, blood flow to the heart is reduced, damaging the heart muscle and resulting in coronary heart disease.

Coronary heart disease can easily cause angina and myocardial infarction. If a large area of the heart muscle is damaged, the heartbeat may become irregular or even stop completely, leading to death. Coronary heart disease is one of the most common heart diseases worldwide and is also the main cause of sudden death among many young people.

Why Does Hot Weather Trigger Coronary Heart Disease?

Many people believe that coronary heart disease mainly occurs in cold winter, but in fact, hot weather also increases the symptoms of coronary heart disease and the risk of heart disease.

1. Sudden Changes in Temperature Cause Intense Contraction of Blood Vessels

In summer, the temperature difference between indoor and outdoor environments is large. Frequently going in and out of air-conditioned places puts stress on the cardiovascular system. Sudden temperature changes cause repeated contraction and dilation of blood vessels, which can easily lead to blockage or thrombosis.

For example, going indoors from a hot street, or repeatedly entering environments with different temperatures in a short time can make it difficult for the body to adapt, causing blood pressure to rise and increasing the burden on the heart. If the heart cannot cope with this pressure, acute cardiovascular diseases may occur.

To protect your heart, avoid frequent transitions between environments with large temperature differences. Allow your body time to adjust; if you need to go out, prepare for temperature changes in advance, such as staying warm or cooling down to reduce vascular stress.

2. High Temperatures Lead to Blood Thickening and Thrombosis

High temperatures cause excessive sweating. If water and electrolytes are not replenished in time, dehydration may occur, blood becomes thicker and the risk of thrombosis increases, thereby increasing the likelihood of myocardial infarction.

Excessive sweating may lead to the following reactions:

Rapid loss of water and electrolytes

Blood becomes thicker and circulation slows down

Increased accumulation of substances in the blood

The heart needs more effort to pump blood to maintain circulation

In addition, imbalances in electrolytes (such as potassium, calcium and magnesium) directly affect the normal contraction of heart muscles and heart rhythms and may cause arrhythmia.

Who Is at High Risk of Coronary Heart Disease?

The following people have a higher risk of coronary heart disease:

People with high blood pressure Long-term high blood pressure narrows and hardens blood vessels, increasing the burden on the heart and accelerating vascular sclerosis, which may trigger coronary heart disease.

People with diabetes High blood sugar damages the inner walls of blood vessels, promoting vascular sclerosis and affecting blood supply to the heart. Some diabetic patients may not feel typical chest pain due to nerve damage, and their condition may be more serious when discovered.

People with high blood lipids or cholesterol Excess cholesterol accumulates on the vessel walls, leading to vessel narrowing and reduced blood flow, increasing the risk of coronary heart disease.

Overweight or obese individuals Excess body fat affects vascular health and increases the risk of diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol.

Smokers Nicotine constricts blood vessels and raises cholesterol levels, making blood vessels more prone to hardening. Smokers have a much higher risk of coronary heart disease than non-smokers.

People who drink heavily over long periods Alcohol contains a large amount of sugar and starch. Long-term drinking easily leads to diabetes and elevated cholesterol, indirectly increasing cardiovascular disease risk.

People under high stress or prolonged mental tension Long-term emotional tension raises blood pressure and increases the burden on the heart. Some people may experience chest tightness or palpitations, which are similar to coronary heart disease symptoms and should be diagnosed early.

Individuals lacking physical exercise Lack of exercise accelerates vascular aging, leads to weight gain and makes it difficult to control blood sugar and blood pressure, thereby increasing the risk of coronary heart disease. Regular exercise helps improve cardiovascular function.

People with high salt, sugar or fat diets High salt intake easily leads to high blood pressure; high sugar increases the risk of diabetes; high fat makes blood vessels more prone to blockage.

People with a family history If parents or siblings have had coronary heart disease, the risk is higher. Those with a family history of diabetes or high blood pressure should also stay alert.

Men and postmenopausal women Men tend to develop cardiovascular problems earlier. Women are protected by hormones before menopause, but their risk increases significantly after menopause and approaches that of men.

Elderly The older you are, the less elastic your blood vessels become and the easier they harden. Regular heart health check-ups are recommended.

Coronary heart disease develops slowly over many years. About 10% of patients have no obvious symptoms or warning signs before onset. Shortness of breath or chest tightness during exercise is often overlooked but may be a warning sign of blocked heart vessels. In severe cases, patients may experience dizziness, angina (chest pain) or sudden heart attack.

Understanding the common symptoms of coronary heart disease helps detect the danger early and seize treatment opportunities.

3 Tips to Prevent Heart Disease in Summer

Proper preventive measures can effectively reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. The following three methods help maintain cardiovascular health in hot weather:

1. Replenish Water and Electrolytes

Sweating heavily in high temperatures makes blood thicker and increases the burden on the heart. You should actively drink water even if you are not thirsty. In summer, daily drinking volume for adults can be calculated by multiplying body weight by 40 (ml). For example, a person weighing 50 kg should take at least about 2 liters per day.

Drink water in separate intervals — 200–300 ml each time, not more than 1 liter per hour. Avoid only drinking water when you feel thirsty. After heavy sweating, in addition to water, you may replenish drinks containing small amounts of electrolytes (such as sports drinks or lightly salted water).

2. Avoid Intense Activity and Temperature Stimulation

Avoid outdoor activities during noon when the heat is strongest. Before entering air-conditioned rooms from a hot environment, first stand in the shade and wipe off sweat, allowing the body to cool down slightly before entry. Inside air-conditioned rooms, prepare a light jacket or scarf to reduce the temperature impact on the body.

3. Maintain Indoor Temperature and Ventilation

Indoor temperature should be kept between 25–27°C and not below 20°C. Open windows in air-conditioned rooms 2–3 times a day for 10–15 minutes each time to ensure air circulation. Use air conditioners and fans together for a more even distribution of cool air and energy saving.

Methods of Diagnosing Coronary Heart Disease

Early diagnosis is crucial for the effective treatment of coronary heart disease. The following are common examination methods to assess heart function and blood vessel condition:

Diagnostic Method

Main Purpose

Advantages and Notes

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

Measures electrical activity of the heart, helping detect heart rhythm and structural problems. Suitable for initial screening.

Quick, painless, radiation-free and non-invasive. If there are no obvious symptoms, results may appear normal; abnormalities are easier to detect only when symptoms or discomfort are present.

Echocardiogram

Uses sound waves to examine heart size, movement and valve condition

Suitable for preliminary assessment of heart structure and function. Quick, painless, radiation-free and non-invasive. Test lasts about 20–30 minutes.

Coronary CT Angiography (CTCA)

Clearly shows whether there is narrowing or blockage in coronary arteries

Suitable for screening suspected coronary heart disease. Fast and painless, non-invasive.

Cardiac MRI

Uses magnetic fields to create images and assess heart tissues, function and blood flow.

Suitable for screening suspected coronary heart disease. Effectively evaluates heart structure and function in detail. Radiation-free, painless and non-invasive.

Regular heart examinations and early detection with appropriate treatment are important for maintaining cardiovascular health.

Common Questions (FAQs)

Q1: Why does summer increase the risk of coronary heart disease? High temperatures cause heavy sweating, easily leading to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, which makes blood thicker and increases the risk of thrombosis. In addition, alternating hot and cold environments stimulate contraction and dilation of blood vessels, putting pressure on the cardiovascular system.

Q2: Who are high-risk individuals for coronary heart disease?
High-risk individuals include older adults (men over 45 and women over 55), people with the “three highs” (high blood pressure, high blood sugar and high cholesterol), smokers, obese individuals and those with a family history of heart disease.

Q3: What are the main symptoms of coronary heart disease?
Typical symptoms include angina (pressure feeling in the chest), shortness of breath, fatigue, palpitations and dizziness. It is important to note that some patients may have no obvious symptoms. If these symptoms occur, especially sudden and worsening chest pain, seek medical attention immediately.

Q4: How can coronary heart disease be prevented during hot weather?
Prevention methods include:

Actively replenishing sufficient water and electrolytes, and drinking regularly even when not thirsty;

Avoiding outdoor activities during noon when temperatures are high and minimizing transitions between hot and cold environments;

Keeping indoor temperature between 25–27°C and ventilating regularly.

Q5: What are the diagnostic methods for coronary heart disease?
Common diagnostic methods include electrocardiograms, echocardiograms, CT coronary angiography and cardiac MRI. Regular examinations help detect problems early and allow timely treatment.

The damage caused by dementia is irreversible, but the earlier it is identified and addressed, the better the chances of delaying deterioration and maintaining quality of life. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the types of dementia, early symptoms, and high-risk groups, and introduces a cutting-edge test that helps detect early-stage Alzheimer’s disease—empowering you to “know before it strikes.”

Can Dementia Steal Your Memories?

Dementia, also known as neurodegeneration, refers to a group of conditions that impair brain function. Patients experience accelerated brain cell death, leading to brain atrophy, which affects memory, language, judgment, and daily functioning. As the disease progresses, individuals may lose basic self-care abilities, such as dressing, toileting, and even swallowing—eventually becoming fully dependent on others, similar to an infant.

More concerning is the gradual loss of recognition of loved ones and familiar environments, due to the deterioration of the hippocampus and temporal lobe—areas of the brain responsible for memory storage and recognition.

<img decoding="async" class="header-image" src="https://trinitymedical.com.hk/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/doctor-holding-human-brain-model-world-brain-tumor-day-brain-stroke-dementia-alzheimer-parkinson-world-mental-health-concept-min.jpg" alt="Dementia is not a single disease, but a general term for a range of neurodegenerative conditions.
What Are the Early Signs of Dementia?

Dementia progresses gradually. Early detection and intervention can help delay the progression. The following are key symptoms across different stages:

Early Stage (Mild Cognitive Impairment)

Short-term memory loss—frequently forgetting recent events

Repeated questions or actions

Getting lost in familiar surroundings

Difficulty handling complex tasks

Decline in verbal expression

Loss of interest in hobbies

Mood swings, such as anxiety or depression

Middle Stage (Moderate Dementia)

Severe disorientation—even within the home

Poor judgment—making illogical decisions

Decreased independence—requires help brushing teeth or washing

Confusion about time—day and night reversal

Worsening behavioral issues—possibly aggressive behavior

Hallucinations or delusions

Noticeable decline in language comprehension and expression

Late Stage (Severe Dementia)

Unable to recognize family and friends

Total loss of independence—incontinence

Difficulty swallowing—needs feeding support

Near-complete loss of verbal abilities

Severely impaired motor function—unable to walk independently

Who Is at High Risk for Dementia?

Anyone can develop dementia, but the following risk factors significantly increase the likelihood:

Older age

Family history of dementia

Cardiovascular conditions (e.g., hypertension, diabetes)

History of stroke or brain injury

Carrier of the APOE ε4 gene

Chronic stress or depression

Long-term smoking or alcohol abuse

How to Self-Assess Your Memory?

Staying aware of your cognitive health is essential. These tips can help with preliminary assessment:
Track memory issues: e.g., forgetting appointments, losing items, struggling to recall events.
Simple tests: memorize a string of numbers or words, then recall them after a few minutes; use mobile apps for online memory tests.
Professional assessment: if you suspect cognitive decline, consider a neuropsychological evaluation for a full assessment.

Various diagnostic methods are available, including cognitive assessments, genetic testing, and imaging." title="Over 30% of Hong Kong Seniors Affected by Dementia. Breakthrough Diagnostic Technology Helps Detect It Before Symptoms Arise!">Memory Loss Is Not to Be Ignored—Screening Is Key

If you’re experiencing memory issues or belong to a high-risk group, further brain health screening is recommended. Various diagnostic methods are available, including cognitive assessments, genetic testing, and brain imaging.

Cognitive Function Tests: Tools such as the MMSE (Mini-Mental State Examination) and MoCA (Montreal Cognitive Assessment) use structured questionnaires to evaluate memory, language, orientation, calculation, and more—helpful in identifying mild cognitive impairment or early Alzheimer’s disease.

APOE Genetic Test: Determines whether you carry high-risk genetic variants such as APOE ε4. While not a diagnostic tool for Alzheimer’s alone, it helps assess your genetic risk profile.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): Detects brain structural changes and atrophy, useful in identifying Alzheimer’s and other degenerative diseases. Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) may be added to assess risk for vascular dementia.

Computed Tomography (CT): Helps rule out hemorrhage, tumors, or other structural abnormalities—providing valuable diagnostic insight for clinicians.

Breakthrough Technology: Early Alzheimer’s Detection via Blood Test

Traditional dementia diagnosis relies on cognitive tests and brain scans—often identifying the disease only after symptoms appear. AD Check Cognition Test is a breakthrough technology that detects early-stage Alzheimer’s disease using a simple blood sample.

Fatty liver is one of the most common liver diseases in Hong Kong. Studies show that over one-quarter of adults in Hong Kong suffer from fatty liver. Meanwhile, 1 in 5 non-obese individuals is found to have fatty liver.

In Asia, the number of fatty liver patients is rapidly increasing! A long-term high-sugar, high-fat diet, lack of exercise, coupled with stress and poor sleep quality, causes many to unknowingly develop fatty liver. Research shows that sitting more than 8 hours a day increases the risk of fatty liver by 44%! Lifestyle habits have a profound impact on liver health.

Hidden Risks of Takeout

Relying on takeout often may unknowingly increase the risk of fatty liver:

1. High in oil and fat: increases fat accumulation in the liver

Takeout is often deep-fried or cooked with heavy oil, such as fried chicken, fried rice, curry rice, etc., which causes daily fat intake to far exceed recommended levels. When the body cannot fully metabolize fat, the excess is stored in the liver, forming fatty liver.

2. Hidden sugars: increases fat synthesis

Many takeout items like sauces, beverages, and desserts contain large amounts of sugar (such as high fructose corn syrup). These sugars are metabolized in the liver and converted into fat stored in the liver.

3. High sodium content: causes water retention and increases liver stress

To enhance flavor and preserve food, takeout meals often contain high amounts of salt and MSG. Excess sodium intake can cause water retention and increase metabolic burden, further harming liver function.

4. Lack of dietary fiber: gut imbalance indirectly affects the liver

Takeout usually lacks vegetables or whole grains. Insufficient fiber intake leads to gut microbiota imbalance and promotes inflammation, which indirectly affects liver health.

5. High in calories but low in nutritional density: leads to obesity

Long-term dependence on takeout leads to excessive calorie intake (e.g., refined carbs, trans fats), increasing the risk of obesity and insulin resistance — the main causes of fatty liver.

Causes of Fatty Liver and High-Risk Groups

Common causes include:

Long-term high-fat, high-sugar diet (e.g., frequent takeout )

Lack of exercise, sedentary lifestyle

Obesity, especially abdominal obesity

High blood lipids or blood sugar

Genetics and age factors

Sleep deprivation or irregular lifestyle

High-risk individuals include:

Office workers aged 30 and above

Frequent drinkers or social drinkers

People with a history of diabetes, hypertension, or high cholesterol

Women undergoing hormonal changes after menopause

Does Fatty Liver Have Symptoms? Watch Out for These Early Signs!

Fatty liver often has no obvious symptoms in the early stage, causing many patients to miss the golden window for treatment. However, if it worsens, the following signs may occur:

Discomfort or bloating in the upper abdomen

Fatigue, lack of energy

Poor appetite, nausea

Unusual weight gain or loss

Abnormal liver function tests (ALT, AST)

If fatty liver progresses further, it may lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer, with more severe symptoms such as:

Jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes)

Ascites, swelling in lower limbs

Nosebleeds, bleeding gums

Palmar erythema, spider angiomas

What Happens if Fatty Liver is Left Untreated?

Many people mistakenly think that fatty liver is a “benign” condition, but in fact, it can develop into the following diseases and pose serious health threats:

Fatty Liver Stage

Symptoms

Liver Inflammation

Pain in the upper right abdomen, occasional fever, or no symptoms

Fibrosis

No obvious symptoms, or mild liver function abnormalities

Cirrhosis

Abdominal bloating, jaundice, leg swelling, skin itching, poor appetite, etc.

Liver Failure

Rapid weight loss, diarrhea, poor appetite

Fatty liver can lead to cirrhosis and increase the risk of liver cancer. If the liver stores too much fat, it can damage cells and cause hepatitis, cirrhosis, or even liver cancer. Controlling fatty liver early helps reduce the risk of worsening and developing into liver cancer!

5 Effective Ways to Reverse Fatty Liver

Fatty liver is a reversible disease. The key is early intervention and consistent lifestyle changes. Here are 5 recommended improvement methods:

1. Manage weight and abdominal fat

Losing 0.5–1 kg per week is most effective; avoid rapid weight loss

Body fat percentage, BMI, and waist circumference matter more than weight

2. Balanced diet with low sugar and low fat

Reduce intake of sugar, fat, and refined starch

Increase dietary fiber and quality protein (beans, fish)

Limit red meat and processed foods

3. Exercise at least 3 times per week

Combine aerobic exercise (e.g. brisk walking, swimming) with resistance training (e.g. weight training)

Each session should be more than 30 minutes, at least 3 times per week

For busy and sedentary individuals, exercising 3 times a week may be challenging. Try walking a few extra flights of stairs or getting off one stop earlier — these are simple, feasible ways to move more. Any movement helps reduce fatty liver risk.

4. Quit alcohol and get adequate sleep

Alcohol increases liver burden; it’s recommended to quit drinking

Maintain 7–8 hours of sleep per night

5. Regular check-ups and liver function monitoring

It is recommended to have liver function and fat index blood tests every 6 months

Consider abdominal ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for further assessment

How to Check for Fatty Liver?

To accurately diagnose and monitor fatty liver, the following are common and effective methods:

Check-up Item

Details and Recommendations

Liver Function Blood Test

Checks for abnormal levels of liver enzymes such as ALT and AST

Liver Ultrasound Scan

Non-invasive and convenient; effective for detecting moderate to severe fatty liver but less sensitive for mild cases; suitable for initial liver evaluation

MRI Scan

Non-invasive with high accuracy; provides detailed assessment of liver condition, including mild fatty liver; shows fat distribution within the liver for targeted diagnosis and advice; ideal for those seeking detailed evaluation or with diagnosed fatty liver

Reversing Fatty Liver Starts Today

Fatty liver is not only a concern for overweight individuals; it is a lifestyle-related condition. Regardless of whether you have obvious symptoms now, frequent consumption of high-fat takeaway meals and prolonged sedentary behavior may silently lead to fatty liver.

Concerned about your liver health? Consider scheduling a comprehensive health check that includes an MRI scan for precise assessment. Early detection of fatty liver helps you monitor and manage your liver condition effectively.

Fortunately, early-stage fatty liver is reversible. By taking prompt actions such as improving your diet, maintaining regular exercise, getting adequate rest, and undergoing periodic health checks, you can effectively reverse the condition and reduce the risk of progression to liver fibrosis or liver cancer.

This article outlines 8 early warning signs and symptoms of stroke, helping you identify and prevent stroke in a timely manner.

Why Dehydration from Sweating and Air Conditioning Increases Stroke Risk

During the summer, high temperatures can lead to rapid fluid loss from the body. Without timely hydration, dehydration may worsen. Dehydration causes the blood to become more viscous, increasing the risk of thrombus (blood clot) formation, which in turn raises the likelihood of cerebrovascular accidents (stroke). Electrolyte imbalances due to dehydration can also disrupt the normal functioning of the heart and brain.

Air conditioning is another potential stroke risk factor. Spending prolonged periods in air-conditioned rooms, especially when transitioning between large temperature differences, can cause blood vessels to constrict. Vasoconstriction raises blood pressure, further increasing the risk of stroke. Moreover, air-conditioned environments tend to be dry, which may contribute to mild dehydration and further elevate stroke risk.

Therefore, it is crucial during summer to stay properly hydrated and use air conditioning sensibly. Drink water regularly, and avoid consuming large volumes at once to reduce the burden on the kidneys. Maintain a moderate room temperature—neither too high nor too low—and ventilate regularly to keep the air fresh.

Common Early Warning Signs of Stroke

Early identification of stroke symptoms is critical to minimizing potential damage. Below are 8 common warning signs that should never be ignored:

Unilateral numbness or weakness: Sudden weakness in the arm or leg, feeling as though one side of the body is unresponsive.

Facial asymmetry: Drooping of one side of the face or a crooked smile.

Speech difficulty: Slurred speech or inability to speak complete sentences.

Vision disturbances: Sudden blurring, double vision, or partial loss of vision in one or both eyes.

Severe headache: A sudden, explosive headache, often accompanied by nausea.

Dizziness and loss of balance: Feeling unsteady while walking or experiencing vertigo.

Cold extremities: Persistent coldness in hands and feet, even during summer, due to poor peripheral circulation.

Confusion: Sudden disorientation or difficulty understanding speech or surroundings.

Recognizing these signs allows you to seek medical attention promptly and reduce the risk of long-term damage. Anyone experiencing the above symptoms should seek emergency care immediately.

Use the “FAST” Method to Quickly Identify Stroke Symptoms

Detecting stroke signs requires careful observation. If you suspect a stroke, the following simple method can help identify it quickly and improve the chances of timely treatment:

FAST Method:
F (Face): Ask the person to smile. Observe if there is drooping or asymmetry in the face.
A (Arms): Ask the person to raise both arms. See if one arm drifts downward or cannot be held up.
S (Speech): Ask them to repeat a simple sentence. Check if their speech is slurred or unclear.
T (Time): If any of these signs appear, call 999 and take the person to the hospital immediately.

In addition to the FAST test, being aware of your own health condition is crucial. Unusual symptoms should be taken seriously and evaluated by a medical professional without delay.

Additionally, regular health check-ups are an effective way to detect stroke risks early. In addition to monitoring indicators such as blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar, MRI can assess vascular health and help diagnose potential issues early for effective prevention and treatment.

MRI Stroke Screening focuses on examining the carotid arteries, cerebral arteries, and the brain. It is a non-invasive, radiation-free, and painless method to evaluate the condition of these blood vessels. The scan accurately detects high-risk stroke factors such as arterial stenosis, thrombosis, and aneurysms, and assists physicians in differentiating between ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke.

Additionally, this screening can help detect asymptomatic cerebrovascular abnormalities early, such as:

Minor strokes that have gone unnoticed

Early-stage arterial narrowing or occlusion

Intracranial aneurysms

By understanding the overall health of the brain’s vascular system, patients and doctors can take early action to prevent or treat issues and avoid neurological damage such as paralysis, aphasia, visual field defects, or swallowing disorders.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q1: What are the initial warning signs of stroke? Does it always involve facial paralysis?
Not necessarily. Stroke warning signs include unilateral weakness, blurred vision, slurred speech, sudden headaches, cold extremities, and imbalance. Some patients may not exhibit the classic symptom of facial drooping. Therefore, even mild symptoms should not be ignored. It is recommended to use the FAST method for assessment and seek immediate medical attention if stroke is suspected.

Q2: Should young people also be concerned about stroke?
Yes. In recent years, stroke has become increasingly prevalent among younger individuals, particularly those with chronic stress, poor diet, lack of sleep, or underlying health issues such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

What Is a Stroke and Why Is It Fatal?

A stroke occurs when the brain’s blood supply is suddenly interrupted or reduced, resulting in oxygen deprivation and damage to brain cells. Strokes are mainly classified into two types: ischemic (caused by a blocked blood vessel that prevents blood flow to the brain) and hemorrhagic (caused by a ruptured blood vessel leading to bleeding in the brain). Severe cases can result in loss of neurological function, paralysis, speech disorders, or even death. Recognizing the common symptoms and early warning signs of stroke is crucial to act within the golden treatment window, which is vital for saving lives.

Can Young People Have Strokes? Stop Thinking Stroke Is Just an “Elderly Disease”!

In recent years, the incidence of stroke among younger patients in Hong Kong (aged 18 to 55) has increased by nearly 30%. These sudden cerebrovascular events not only threaten life but may also lead to long-term complications and psychological distress, imposing a heavy burden on patients and their families.

The stress of a busy lifestyle, frequent late nights, lack of exercise, and poor dietary habits pose significant health risks for young individuals. Even if you feel healthy, it’s important to remain vigilant for stroke symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, or numbness in limbs. Seeking medical attention early is critical.

Do You Have These Stroke Risk Factors?

Strokes don’t happen without cause. Be aware of the following risk factors:

Age: Stroke risk increases with age.

Family History: Those with a family history of stroke are at higher risk.

Hypertension: High blood pressure damages blood vessels, leading to arteriosclerosis, thrombosis, or aneurysms, all of which raise the risk of stroke.

The “Three Highs”: Diabetes and high cholesterol accelerate vascular hardening.

Unhealthy Habits: Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and late-night routines harm vascular health.

Obesity and Sedentary Lifestyle: Lack of physical activity reduces circulation and increases the risk of blood clots.

High-Sodium Diet: Frequent consumption of fried foods, instant noodles, and other high-salt items elevates blood pressure.

Understanding these risk factors allows you to take proactive steps in reducing the likelihood of stroke.

Young People Should Not Ignore the Risk
Constant exposure to high-pressure work environments, irregular sleep schedules, and poor dietary choices are contributing to the rising trend of stroke among younger individuals.

Common causes include hypertension, high blood sugar, and high blood lipids. Many patients only discover these chronic conditions upon hospital admission. This highlights that even younger individuals should not overlook traditional stroke risk factors. Maintaining a healthy diet, managing salt intake, and regularly monitoring blood pressure and cholesterol levels are key to stroke prevention.

Discover 7 Major Risk Factors and 3 Key Prevention Methods">

3 Healthy Habits to Prevent Stroke

1. Quit Smoking and Alcohol

Both smoking and excessive alcohol intake damage the vascular walls, accelerate hardening, and increase the risk of bleeding. Quitting smoking and drinking is the first step in protecting cardiovascular health.

2. Maintain a Regular Routine and Exercise Moderately

A regular sleep schedule helps stabilize blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Moderate exercise, such as brisk walking or swimming, improves circulation and cardiorespiratory health, thereby lowering the risk of stroke.

3. Eat a Balanced Diet and Reduce Salt and Fat Intake

Consume more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins. Avoid excessive processed and salty foods to help maintain vascular elasticity and lower blood pressure.

Regular Health Check-Ups Are the First Step in Stroke Prevention

In addition, routine health screenings are an effective way to detect stroke risk early. Besides monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels, MRI scans can also be used to assess vascular health, aiding in early diagnosis and enabling timely prevention and treatment.

MRI Stroke Screening focuses on the carotid arteries, cerebral blood vessels, and brain tissue, offering a radiation-free, painless way to assess the condition of the carotid and cerebral arteries. It accurately detects high-risk factors such as vascular narrowing, thrombosis, and aneurysms. MRI also assists physicians in differentiating between ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes.

Moreover, this screening can help detect underlying cerebrovascular issues that may not present obvious symptoms, such as:

Minor strokes that have gone unnoticed

Early-stage vascular narrowing or occlusion

Aneurysms

Understanding the overall condition of your brain’s blood vessels allows for early intervention and treatment to prevent neurological damage such as paralysis, aphasia, visual field defects, or swallowing difficulties.
